For my feedback I chose a tutorial via google hangout and a short report.
I am really pleased with the feedback from my tutor. She has indicated that there is potential to my paintings and that I have worked with enthusiasm and ambition. Indeed the areas we discussed for development are the areas that I myself had already felt weak and so it was with great understanding and interest that I listened to her suggestions.
Assignment
My tutor said that this was a creative composition which was something I was trying to achieve and she recognised the research and how this informed the painting. She said I used oils well but we then had a discussion around application of paint. She suggested that I try lots of different brushes and density of paint. I agreed that the painting was a little flat and indeed the lamp shade had been painted differently. I did use only a couple of brushes and for my future paintings will try different sizes and shapes.
Sketchbook & Other Work
My tutor recognised I was finding some of the earlier exercises which required painting with drawing materials difficult and now some way through part 2, I feel this is still a bit of an issue. I like using paint or pastel to do initial compositional studies but am unhappy with the results if I try to use these materials for a ‘finished’ painting.
I was really pleased with the jug and bowl paintings and she said they showed an understanding of form but they needed more shadow and depth to anchor them. I have now received my portfolio back and have taken another look and I now can totally see what she means, particularly on the right hand side of both paintings. She has suggested I question how I apply the oil paint with thicker or more fluid application and I will try this in future paintings.
Research
My tutor is happy so far with my research and commented that it was very clear how much more in depth it was when I was discussing work that I had actually seen in a gallery. I have to agree that, sometimes you do not get the full impact of a painting unless you can see it up close.
Learning Blog
I have concentrated more on the technical processes for this part and I now need to start to reflect and evaluate my work. I also need to establish a working routine to fit around my job and free time to enable me to ensure I can complete this course in the necessary time.
She has suggested some artists for further research and I have made a note of these in the Note section of my blog.
The areas my tutor has suggested for development are as follows:-
Think about the fluidity or viscosity of the paint, how you want to apply it.
This will develop from the descriptive as the work develops and you can evaluate and self-reflect more.
You can be more explorative with the paint even in the tasks.
Think about the intentions going forward as you choose the subjects/objects to paint.
I will try to apply all of the above points into my work going forward.
